Questions

Why did you choose your course at the University of Birmingham?

My previous academic background and work experience are not closely related to philosophy. Wishing to take a break from my existing career and to explore other areas, I was researching academic programmes that focus on training one’s ability to probe problems and communicate instead of teaching specific domain knowledge to solve practical problems. Therefore, studying philosophy came to my mind.
The main reason I choose the MA Philosophy programme at the University of Birmingham is that this programme is open to applicants with a diverse background. Additionally, University of Birmingham has great reputation.

What has been the highlight of your course?

All modules and seminars are informative and thought provoking. The module content includes both the classic readings, but also contemporary debates, which provide students with different aspects to contemplate the topics. I’ve enjoyed the seminar discussions, through which you learn different ideas from other students. Some of them are inspiring and others challenge your assumptions. Those discussions help me to learn about the diversity of individual’s experience and be open to and embrace the difference. Additionally, the lecturers are very supportive, and I find the office hours are quite helpful, not only for getting essay feedback, but it’s also a good chance to share your thoughts and ideas.

What have you learnt from your programme?

The programme guides me to explore several core areas in Philosophy. I also gained knowledge on how philosophy relates to other disciplines, e.g. psychology and psychiatry.
Additionally, the module assignments help me improve my writing skills and independent research skills. I get practice on how to develop an idea to a well-structured argument. Additionally, I’ve learnt how to write a philosophical essay that conveys arguments in a clear way.

What have you enjoyed most about living and studying in Birmingham?

The city has a lot to explore. I live near Victoria Square, where lots of events, such as the Frankfurt Christmas Market, are hosted all year around. I also like the shops, restaurants, and cafes in the Jewellery Quarter. I enjoy the greenness and peace when walking on the street in the Edgbaston and Harborne. Additionally, the city provides convenient transportation to other cities so you can explore during the holidays or plan a short trip on weekends!
