Questions

Hi Fanni, I came across your profile and thought it would be best to reach out to you. I'm wanting to pursue my MSc in HRM from the UK and the University of Birmingham is one of my options. Do you mind telling me how you found the course and what are the opportunities like in the UK in terms of international students? Thanks!

Hi,

Thank you for reaching out!

I found the course very relevant to the actual HR field in the job marker mainly because if you choose the CIPD pathway it will give you hands on experience as you’ll learn from professionals from the industry. This means that you’ll need to solve real life HR problems based in the UK. The CIPD pathway is strongly related to the UK and its labour law. Consequently, if your plan is to secure a job in the UK on the long term, then I would definitely recommend to choose this course. You’ll also have the chance to go for the normal MSC in Human Resources course which won’t be that country specific as the CIPD pathway. In that case I would recommend to check the following link to see which modules the course will incorporate.https://www.birmingham.ac.uk/postgraduate/courses/taught/business/human-resource-management.aspx

I hope this helps!

Hi, I am from India and I am currently pursuing a bachelors in Business Administration. I am intrigued by the course details of the MSc Human Resource Management and I would like to know about the potential career opportunities or career paths to take after finishing this program?

Hi,

Thank you for your interest in the course! I believe it’s always better to demonstrate it with real life examples. I started my career after this course at a HR tech start-up based in the UAE as a People Analytics intern followed by being a Research Intern (HR category) in a HR tech company, then being a Project Management intern at Amazon. Currently, I am doing a HR Transformation Project Management role in the aviation industry based in Budapest, Hungary.

I hope this helps!

Hi, I am interested in studying the MSc HRM (with CIPD pathway) and was just wondering how many contact hours and how much independent work is involved on the course? Also what are the career links like? Thanks for your help:)

Hi

Thank you for your interest in the course!
It is a full time course in theory but I myself managed to work next to my studies part-time in the hospitality industry in order to finance my daily life! I would say that it totally depends on oneself determination. Regarding carrier opportunities after the course it is very wide range from the consultancy industry to HR specific roles. Just to give a real life example, I started my career after this course at a HR tech start-up based in the UAE as a People Analytics intern followed by being a Research Intern in a HR tech company, then being a Project Management intern at Amazon. Currently, I am doing a HR Transformation Project Management role in the aviation industry based in Budapest, Hungary.

I hope my answer was helpful and please feel free to reach me if you have any other question regarding the course!

Kind regards,

Fanni

Hi Fanni, I'm a Business Management student pursuing my undergraduate degree in a British university in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. I would like to know if the University of Birmingham accepts students who have done 3-year undergraduate courses for their postgrad degree. I was going through the entry requirements and it only mentioned entry for students who have done 4 years hence why I was curious about this. Thanks for your help!

Hi, I myself came to do this course with a 3 years BA (hons) Background so you shouldn’t have a problem with applying or being accepted to the course solely on the basis of how many years of undergraduate years you have.

Dear Fanni, I am planning on applying to the University of Birmingham to pursue my education and to eventually settle down in the UK. I currently hold a MBA degree from my home country, Azerbaijan, and work as an HR assistant at one of the local companies. However, I am a little confused regarding which course to choose. Do you think studying HR management could be a good fit for international students and for future job perspectives? Also, could you please help to differentiate between HR Management and HR man with CIPD pathway? Thank you in advance for your kind help.

Hi,
I would definitely recommend the course for international students as I myself was one of them. Majority of the modules are applicable internationally. By choosing the CIPD pathway you will be studying about HR Policies in practice from very experienced professionals. It is recommended to take this course as opposed to the normal HRM course if you are planning to pursue a career in the UK as this module highly involves learning employment laws and their implementation in practice in the UK context. On the other hand, if you decide to take the normal Human Resource Management course you will have the freedom to choose 1 module per semester that you are interested in given by the university which are obviously highly connected to the field itself. If your ultimate goal is to settle in the UK then I would definitely recommend you to choose the CIPD pathway.
I hope this helped!

Hi, I want to pursue my Masters in Project Management, could you help me know what opportunities there will be after completing this course? Is there a demand for PMO?

Hi

What a coincidence because right now I am a PM intern at Amazon even though the course I finished was not directly related to it. I would definitely say that there is a demand for the role and that is all about the transferable skills so don’t be only open to HR related jobs once the course is finished. Job roles I’ve done myself that were related to HR: HR Research analyst, People Analytics Intern, Consulting Intern.

Hi there, I was wondering what is meant by Human Resource with CIPD pathway? Will I work and study at the same time? Can you please explain? Thank you

Hi

Thank you for your question.

CIPD stands for Chartered Institute of Personnel Development which is the main professional body to accredit and award professional human resources (HR) qualifications. The CIPD’s qualifications are the recognised professional standard for HR and training specialists working across the UK’s public, private and charity sectors. This doesn’t mean you would work next to your studies, but would mean that at the end of the course along with your Diploma you will also receive a certificate stating that you have completed CIPD level 7 which is the highest level. This could be especially useful for those who wish to pursue a career in the UK.

I hope this answers your question.

Kind regards,

Fanni

Hello, I am from Indonesia and I am really excited for this course. Could you give me some information about the University of Birmingham, especially the environment around it? I also wanted to have a conversation with you regarding my further Masters degree study here. Thank you.

Hello,

Of course! The environment of the university, regarding its students and lecturers are generally very friendly, approachable and there is no situation or matter you wouldn’t find a solution for, someone who could listen to you and help to solve it or direct you to the right department. The student population is very diverse which makes the whole student experience very unique. The student community is coming from over 150 countries around the world and the academic staff are 34% overseas nationals. There are over 250 societies you can choose from if you wish to do something outside of your academic studies from a Harry Potter society, baking society, different nationalities’ and religions’ society etc. There is also a dedicated career support department for postgraduate students. They organise different job fairs, networking events as well as helping you to enhance your CV or prepare you for an upcoming interview or you can just simply have a conversation about any career related issue. They really are great at what they do.

The infrastructure and the atmosphere of the university is extraordinary. We have a greenheart in the middle of the campus just in front of our library where students can relax or take a study break after some library session. Most of the buildings we have are recently renovated and very well equipped with computers and cafe places. If you a sporty person we also have a sport and fitness centre where you can do many sports from basketball to swimming or just simply going to the gym. In relation to student accommodation I live in a private house so I can’t give you any personal opinion but my friends who used to live in accommodation all liked it. Often these facilities are located very close to the campus providing an easy access to any of the buildings you need to attend on a daily basis.

I hope that I could give you some idea about our unique student experience here in Birmingham and if you have any other questions please do not hesitate to contact me.

Hi! I wanted to know if I, as someone who has not done maths since Grade 11 and 12, would be able to do the CIPD Course? I'm pursuing BA in Political Science and I know the entry requirements are open to all disciplines but I'm still apprehensive about the maths/statistical part of the course. Can you tell me if maths forms a major chunk of the course?

Hello

Doing a CIPD pathway course does not require you to have a strong math knowledge at all as none of the modules you will be studying involve any calculation.

I hope this helps to answer your question and if there is anything else I could help with please do not hesitate to contact me.

Kind regards,

Fanni
