Why did you choose to study for a PhD in English Language and Linguistics?

I really wanted the opportunity to conduct my own research and contribute to a field that I am passionate about. I feel this is something I can achieve through my PhD programme.

Why did you choose to undertake research at the University of Birmingham?

After doing my MA in Applied Linguistics at the University of Birmingham, I got the chance to meet academic staff whose research complements my research interests, so I was really keen to work with them.

What are the best things about your course?

I feel really supported by my supervisors and value being a part of a well renowned research community in my discipline.

What is life like as a researcher at the University of Birmingham?

It feels great to be able to conduct my own independent research while also being part of something bigger than myself. That’s what it’s like to be a researcher in the Department of English Language and Linguistics at the University of Birmingham.

What support have you received during your PhD?

As a doctoral student I have access to academic support from my supervisors as well as additional support from a mentor within the department. There is also plenty of peer-to-peer support through doctoral student research groups, which I have valued very much throughout my first year.

Outside of your research, what experience have you gained and how will it help you in the future?

I have been able to gain insight into academia and research through assisting with the organisation of a department postgraduate conference as well as other talk series and seminars. This experience will be invaluable as I advance through my PhD programme and beyond.
