Why did you choose your course at the University of Birmingham?

First of all, the University of Birmingham, as one of the esteemed red-brick universities in the UK, boasts a distinguished reputation for its high-level research, robust faculty, and a track record of producing outstanding talents. The University of Birmingham enjoys a high reputation in my home country, which further strengthens my desire to pursue postgraduate studies at this university. Furthermore, having completed my undergraduate degree in Communication Studies, I discovered that the Language, Culture, and Communication major at the University of Birmingham aligns with both my academic background and aspirations and facilitates my profound interest in the intricacies of language and culture communication. With these considerations in mind, I have confidently chosen the University of Birmingham for my postgraduate studies, anticipating a rich academic experience and a solid foundation for my future endeavors.

What has been the highlight of your course and why?

As an international student, the academic approach in the UOB has proven to be exceptionally novel for me. The seminar format, in particular, has been instrumental in solidifying my understanding through group discussions and fostering deeper contemplation. Engaging with both teachers and peers has allowed me to unearth additional layers of content and expand my perspectives. During seminars, each teacher actively encourages us to participate in discussions and welcomes our responses. The positive and affirming atmosphere when I contribute, has not only boosted my confidence but also steered me in the right direction. This pedagogical method has ignited a fervor for delving into the course material and conducting research.

What have you learnt from your course?

I have gained valuable insights into linguistics, particularly given my undergraduate background in journalism and communication. The knowledge I’m acquiring in my current field is quite novel for me. Before attending classes, I had never contemplated the intricate connections between language and identity, class, power, and social status. The realization that language variations can significantly impact our societal attitudes has been eye-opening. These newfound understandings have prompted a reevaluation of my perspective on language and have sparked a renewed interest in exploring the diverse linguistic expressions of individuals. I’ve also come to recognize the importance of various languages and language variations. Understanding the underlying motivations is crucial to fostering effective cross-cultural communication in our increasingly globalized society.

How you have you benefited from receiving the scholarship?

Receiving the Great scholarship as a child from an average-income family has significantly alleviated the financial strain on my household, thereby lightening the burden on my parents. This scholarship, a result of my diligent academic efforts and active involvement in various extracurricular activities during my university years, not only serves as a testament to my achievements but also stands as a source of pride for myself, my teachers, and my parents. The attainment of this scholarship has become a noteworthy accolade on my future resume, symbolising both my dedication to academic excellence and my commitment to personal growth.

How does receiving the scholarship and studying at the University of Birmingham support your future aspirations?

During my academic pursuits in the United Kingdom, the British Council organized meetings for scholars who were recipients of the Great Scholarships. This initiative not only facilitated networking opportunities among scholars but also fostered an environment where I could connect with other high-achieving individuals, creating a space for learning and collaboration.

What has surprised you most about being a student at the University of Birmingham?

The academic atmosphere at our university is truly extraordinary. The library serves as a dynamic hub of intellectual activity, where numerous students are consistently engrossed in their studies. Observing these academic achievers diligently applying themselves inspires me to strive for excellence as well.

Additionally, the school administration actively seeks student input, often sending representatives to gather opinions and suggestions. This commitment to listening to students not only fosters a sense of inclusion but also demonstrates a genuine respect for our perspectives.

Furthermore, The College of Arts and Laws regularly organizes social events, providing opportunities for students from diverse majors to engage in meaningful interactions. These gatherings not only contribute to a vibrant campus life but also facilitate a seamless integration into the larger academic community.

What have you enjoyed most about living and studying in Birmingham?

Birmingham, the second-largest city in the UK, boasts not only breathtaking landscapes but also a plethora of exquisite shopping and recreational destinations. Its convenient transportation system enhances the overall quality of life, making it an ideal place for me in the UK. The people I’ve encountered here are consistently warm, courteous, and welcoming. I vividly recall my first day in Birmingham, when I struggled to find my way to the transportation hub, a kind stranger, sensing my predicament, took the initiative to guide me to the right location, this moment of genuine kindness has solidified my fondness for this city. Beyond academic pursuits, what I cherish most about Birmingham is the opportunity to share meals and explore the vibrant shopping scene with friends from various countries.

Engaging in these activities not only allows me to immerse myself in the local culture but also serves as a powerful antidote to the occasional negative emotions that can accompany the experience of being alone in a foreign land.
