Please tell us about your experience of using the University's services.

The Careers network helped me to explore various industries I can apply to for course-specific internships and graduate jobs.

What has been your biggest achievement during your course so far?

Being able to fully understand and apply the knowledge the program offers. Also, getting the opportunity to serve as course representative for my program.

What are the best things about your course?

The program has broadened my knowledge and understanding of health and Safety and how it can apply not only in the oil and gas industry but also in other sectors to ensure good work ethics while promoting productivity. Also, I have gained an in-depth knowledge about the different kinds of hazards people are likely to be exposed to in several workplaces and how to either eliminate or control the risks of the hazards.

Tell us about yourself and your journey to postgraduate study.

I studied BSc. Natural Resource Management during my undergraduate studies at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology in 2017.
Before my postgraduate studies, I worked in the oil and gas industry for 6 years and also served as the Senior Operations lead for an Oil Marketing Company, where I monitored and ensured the company’s operations were in line with the standards of operations set by the regulatory bodies.
During the years I worked in the oil and gas industry, I was exposed to the challenges in the industry including how petroleum products were mishandled which led to loss of life and property. This challenged me to undertake a study on how health and safety could be effectively practiced in the workplace, particularly in the oil and gas industry. Also, with the rise of climate change crises and the oil and gas industry being among the top contributors to this effect, I wanted to study how governments could explore the use of greener fuels, and develop and implement effective strategies to ensure safe operations in the industry.

What was your motivation for postgraduate study?

I am passionate about health and safety and how it can be applied at the workplace to ensure employees work under safe conditions while enhancing productivity. So I decided to undertake a Masters’ program in Health, Safety and Environment Management at the University of Birmingham.
