What were you doing before you started your couse?

Before starting the MSc program, I completed my Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science from a university in India. I then worked as a Cyber Security Engineer at JusPay Pvt. Ltd., where I performed penetration testing and security assessments of web applications. This experience allowed me to gain hands-on skills in offensive cyber techniques. However, I wanted to develop a deeper understanding of Cyber Security issues and theories. This motivated me to pursue a postgraduate degree in Cyber Security at the University of Birmingham.

Why did you choose your course at the University of Birmingham?

The University of Birmingham’s MSc in Cyber Security appeals to me greatly due to its prestigious reputation, expert faculty, and comprehensive curriculum. By gaining a postgraduate qualification from a leading institution, I could stand out in the competitive field of cyber security. What has been your biggest achievement during your course?

One of my most significant achievements during the MSc Cyber Security program was successfully conducting a penetration test of a Google device as part of an assessment. I was able to identify and exploit vulnerabilities in the device, demonstrating the technical skills in penetration testing and offensive cyber techniques I have developed through the course. Completing this hands-on, real-world project has given me confidence in my ability to apply my learning to address real cybersecurity issues. It was a valuable opportunity to put into practice the concepts and skills I have gained and pushed me to the limits of my current knowledge and experience.

What piece of advice would you give to anyone considering postgraduate study in your field?

I would advise students interested in postgraduate study in cyber security to look for programs that take a rigorous and comprehensive approach to the subject. As cyber threats are complex and fast-evolving, a program that covers both technical and non-technical aspects of cyber security, as well as both theory and practice, would provide a holistic perspective necessary for leadership roles in the field. It is also important to consider the expertise and experience of faculty members, as well as opportunities to apply learning to real-world problems. Getting hands-on experience and networking with others in the field can be invaluable in preparing for a career in cyber security. With hard work and persistence, a postgraduate degree can open up opportunities to work on the cutting-edge of cybersecurity and make an impact on this increasingly crucial area.

What was your motivation for undertaking postgraduate study?

My motivation for pursuing postgraduate study in Cyber Security was to gain advanced and specialised knowledge in this fast-growing field. I have always had a keen interest in Cyber Security, particularly in offensive security. The MSc program at the University of Birmingham allows me to explore cutting-edge concepts and applications in Cyber Security in depth. I hope to emerge from the program with expertise and skills that would allow me to contribute to strengthening cyber defences and systems.
