Questions

Hello Anita, I have an offer for MSc Communications Engineering and it has been almost four years since I graduated from my Undergrad. I switched fields and have worked in IT for the past four years. Coming back to Communications Engineering is something that has always been my interest, especially things to do with antennas. Having been out of touch with the field, I would like to know if the course is structured in such a way that we deep drive immediately or do we a get a few weeks of settling down time?

Hi, Thank you for your question.
Taking the MSc offer will be more than helpful in your career as the modules cover both Computer Networks and Communication Engineering.
I believe you are aware the programme runs for 12 months so there is a lot to cover during that time. However, in my opinion the courses are structured to accommodate medium paced learning which works fine for all students.

How is the University of Birmingham different from other universities offering a similar course? Do employers find the course structure and opportunities presented within the coursework for research and study at UoB satisfactory for industry preparedness?

Hello,

Thank you for your question.
The University of Birmingham is one of the top ranking universities in the United Kingdom and has a multicultural society. The University offers a better learning platform for students, which definitely increase your exposure to the industry.

Also, employers do not have access to the course structure but any recruiter can spot the difference in how a course was completed on your CV when you properly put it together.

In addition, the University provides you with a professional who can help review your CV and ensure all relevant projects and courses are reflected in your CV where appropriate.
I hope this helps.

I want to ask about the Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning Masters if you have any background on it? Do you recommend the degree and is the Computer Science department strong? Finally do you also recommend the University of Birmingham?

Hi,

The course is extremely strong. I do recommend the University because the department’s link to industry are second to none and there are lots of ways to get involved. Staff are very good at allowing you to follow your own interests.

What piece of advice would you give to anyone considering postgraduate study in your field?

I personally believe that prospective students should have the seal and focus in order to excel in my field. The modules are taken very seriously and you must be willing to put in your very best even if it involves late nights in the library.

Also, a prospective Postgraduate student in my field should be willing to work in teams because that is another way to get good results in every module. Most importantly, time management plays a very critical role during your program as it is a short and very intensive way to study.

What has been the highlight of your time at Birmingham?

I always look forward to the new projects I must carry out in each module I took. Personal or group work always gives me the opportunity to get a better understanding of what my course is all about.
Least I forget the joy that my friends and I get after we hand in a coursework and we decide to give ourselves a good treat.

Why did you choose the University of Birmingham?

I choose this University as a pathway to achieve my goal of acquiring the expertise necessary for my career, some of the reasons being that it has a positive record for excellence in my field of study and this will teach me to employ practical knowledge and constructive reasoning in this major, spread my wings and reach my full potential.
In addition, the mixture of cultures from all over the world would broaden my horizon on nationalities globally, notwithstanding the fact that my interaction with individuals in the environment would be greatly developed.

What was your motivation for undertaking postgraduate study?

In secondary school, I was able to develop a strong academic background based on what I learnt inside and outside the classroom because of the high interest I possess in STEM (Science Technology Engineering and Mathematics). Also, going to study Electrical/Electronic Engineering further in my tertiary institution aided in broadening my scope of knowledge and widened my horizon in various aspects. As such, my research qualities were enhanced and I covered a wide range of courses in a concise manner.
Obtaining a Masters degree in Communication and Networks Engineering will go a long way to help me gain insight into communication systems of the future, and gain practical skills to be part of great innovations in the communication sector. Furthermore, having the degree will give me the advantage of adding to my initial industrial work experience in the Nigerian Communication Commission. I believe that the intellectual ability, passion and commitment I possess was enough motivation to undertake and excel in my Postgraduate study. Finally, doing this will help achieve my goals both locally and internationally.

What, for you, are the best things about the course?

The good relationship that exists between the staff members at the University and the student is incredible and as such brings out the best in every student. A student’s need is very important and is in most cases provided to the student as the staff member’s priority is to render assistance in the best possible way. Every student is given the opportunity to perform at their best one way or the other.

How did you find studying at the University of Birmingham?

Academically, it has been very challenging. With some modules,  I had sleepless nights while the others were easy to comprehend.

In terms of the environment, I would say the student and staff are quite friendly and helpful given that the University is in a multicultural city.

So generally, I would say that I’ve had my ups and down studying here but it’s gradually coming to an end.
