I would like to go into a data analysis role within the healthcare or biotechnology industry. I’m also keen to explore the idea of further research one day.

Tell us about the teaching environment and lecturers on your course.

Whilst the Health Data Science MSc course is still relatively new, it is clear to me that all of the teaching staff take pride in the course, display a lot of enthusiasm and often are teaching us their own research, which goes to show how excellent the teaching staff are in their fields of work. The module leads care a lot about the students on my course and are always keen to help with any concerns, this has created a great learning environment.

Tell us how the course has helped you to develop your skills for your current/future career.

As part of my course I have had to write a lot of essays and deliver presentations at a frequency that I have never done before. Therefore, I have really improved my academic writing skills, how to review academic literature and how to confidently present. All of these skills will be useful for me in my future career, as it will be imperative that I can present my thoughts and work to others.

What are the best things about your course?

I’ve learnt so much more than I expected from this course. Whilst the pace has been intense at times it has equipped me with the skills to carry out my own research, making me feel like I have the potential to make a tangible impact. I really enjoy being able to use large datasets to develop machine learning models that can predict disease classifications!

Why did you choose to study your current course?

Originally, I came to university to study medicine, but after realising that my heart wasn’t in it I moved towards a less clinical and more research focused area of health data science. I chose this course because it incorporates my interests in data science and medicine, giving me the chance to learn from leaders of the field and develop my own research skills.

Why did you choose to study at the University of Birmingham?

I am from Birmingham so I have always been familiar with the university but when I first came to the university undergraduate open day in 2019 I was blown away by the beautiful campus and excited by the idea of belonging to a university with a global reputation as a leader in education and research. I chose UoB as the place to study my master’s for the same reason!
