Questions

Why did you choose your course at the University of Birmingham?

Having spent an incredible three years completing an undergraduate degree at the University of Birmingham, staying on for a Masters course was an easy decision. The quality of teaching is second to none. All of my tutors were outstanding in their field and able to highlight the key ways the law we learned in books was actually being applied to real-life scenarios. This pushed me to become an independent thinker. Birmingham Law School truly prepares its students for their careers.

Also, the wide range of optional modules is brilliant. Students can take one subject in semester one and then delve even deeper into a sub-topic within that subject during semester two. Seeing how these different areas of law are all layered and interconnected provided for a rich learning experience.

What has been the highlight of your course and why?

The highlight of my course was studying the LLM International Trade Law and Policy module.

After studying International Economic and European Law during my LLB at Birmingham Law School, I was thrilled to learn that the university offered another related subject on the LLM programme.

Studying this module really allowed me to interlink significant real-life situations, such as Trump’s trade war in America, with conflicts in other countries, such as China, all whilst studying in little England!

This module encouraged me to think about how I would like these conflicts to be resolved, and pushed me to challenge my own opinions. This is a fantastic set up for prospective PhD students, lecturers, and legal academics.

What have you learnt from your course?

To apply my knowledge, be flexible, and overcome barriers! Studying a Masters course is never easy. But the experience of learning new areas of law and becoming a more active researcher taught me to be persistent.

What has surprised you most about being a student at the University of Birmingham?

As great as the academic support is, the careers programmes at the University of Birmingham have surprised me as being equally as good. There are dedicated mooting competitions and debates for Masters students only, allowing you not only to make friends with your peers but to learn from them too, as my course had quite a few qualified lawyers on it.

What have you enjoyed most about living and studying in Birmingham?

Relaxing in the Green Heart and looking up at Old Joe! The campus is truly beautiful. Beyond that, eating at the restaurants on Broad Street and in the City Centre, which is only a short train ride away from campus, was always a great break.
